After many conversations about where all my lighters disappear to, and checking the pockets of likely looking characters leaving my house - I thought it would be cool to be able to trace where all the lighters went. Ideally you'd fit GPS and satellite links to all the lighters; but on my budget human intervention and some sticky labels was the way forward.
So some software was written, and I made up a bunch of lighters with labels. The labels have some text that stays the same, and a unique serial number. Here are some pictures.
I "register" lighters as my own, and then distribute/lose/give them away. Now you can get hold of lighters too, by donating to lighterthief! If someone finds or steals one of these lighters and is interested in where it came from, they can go to this website and have a look.
First of all the website gets some new information about where that lighter is currently, and then makes it easy to find out that lighter's history.
After chatting about the idea, it seemed that enough people would actually be interested enough to type in their names and addresses.
